ASE certification cost & path planner

Choose the ASE tests you want to take, have passed or need to recertify. The planner totals ASE's fees (including the recertification cap), flags prerequisites and shows the work experience you'll need. Nothing is stored or sent.

Estimate only. Fees and rules are copied from ASE's own pages (last verified 2026-10-18). ASE sets the final price at checkout, including any sales tax, and decides what experience and training count. Check ASE's fee page before you buy.

The rules the planner uses

  • Fees: $34 registration fee per order; $62 per test, except advanced L1-L4 tests at $124. Recertification tests are $62 each (L1-L3 recertification $124), and ASE caps recertification test fees at $186 per order, so "the most anyone would pay to recertify in a single order is $220." ASE collects sales tax on purchases in many states. (ASE: Registration Dates and Fees)
  • Work experience: G1 needs 1 year, advanced "L" tests 3 years, all other tests 2 years. "Up to half of the experience requirement may be met by completing appropriate vocational training." You may test before you have the experience (except X1), but you aren't certified until you meet it. (ASE Certification: Need to Know, p. 6; ASE: Work Experience Requirements)
  • Prerequisites: to register for L1 you must have passed A8; for L3, both A6 and A8. (ASE L1, ASE L3)
  • Master status and recertification: A1-A8 make an ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician; recertify every five years. Purchased tests must be taken within 90 days. (ASE A1-A9)
  • ASE Renewal App (A1-A9 only): $52 a year; 8 correct-answer credits extend that certification by 1 year. (ASE fees; Need to Know, p. 4)
